Download & Prepare
Choose whether to use the desktop application or the web version of Trezor Suite. Desktop offers convenience for repeated offline use; the web version is great for quick access from multiple machines.
Quick download checklist
- Open your browser and navigate to the official domain (bookmark it).
- Select the installer for your operating system or click the web app link.
- Verify digital signatures or checksums when available (advanced).
- Close other apps and plug in your Trezor using the provided cable.
Initialize: Create or Restore
The initialization flow has two clear options: create a brand new wallet or restore from an existing recovery seed. Choose carefully based on whether you already hold funds on another wallet.
Create a brand-new wallet
- Connect your Trezor and follow Suite prompts to start a new wallet.
- The Trezor will generate a recovery phrase — physically write each word on the provided recovery card (in order).
- Confirm the words on the device when asked.
- Set a secure PIN on the device — this prevents routine misuse if the device is lost.
- Optionally enable a passphrase to create a hidden account (advanced; manage with care).
Restore from an existing seed
If you have a seed phrase from another hardware wallet or previous Trezor, choose Restore wallet and enter words exactly. The device will recreate the same deterministic accounts.
Core Workflows: Receive, Send, and Track
After initialization, the Suite becomes the control center: add accounts, verify addresses, and sign transactions right on-device.
Receive
- Select the currency account and click Receive.
- Verify the receiving address displayed in Suite matches the address shown on your Trezor screen.
- Share the verified address with the sender.
Send
- Click Send, paste the recipient address and enter the amount.
- Confirm fee and details in Suite, then verify and approve the transaction on your device screen.
- The device signs the transaction internally — the private key never leaves the Trezor.
Monitor & Audit
Use the transaction history, address book, and block explorer links in Suite to reconcile incoming and outgoing transactions. For large transfers, make a small test transaction first.
Advanced Options
When you’re comfortable with basics, explore features that power advanced custody setups.
Passphrase-protected hidden wallets
Passphrases create additional hidden accounts derived from your seed. They are powerful for separating funds but introduce operational risk: losing the passphrase = losing access. Use them only if you store the passphrase securely.
Multisignature & integrations
Trezor can participate in multisig setups with compatible wallet software. Multisig increases security by requiring multiple approvals for a transaction — ideal for shared custody or business use.
Third-party swaps
Suite may offer swap partners to trade between assets. These are convenience features — always review fees, slippage, and terms before confirming swaps with external providers.
Security Practices (must-read)
Hardware wallets are a major step up from hot wallets, but security is a habit. The following practices dramatically reduce the chance of theft or irreversible loss.
Recovery seed safety
- Write seeds on physical media; consider metal backups for durability.
- Store backups in separate, secure locations (reduces single-point failure).
- Never digitize the seed (no photos, no cloud, no emails).
Device hygiene
- Buy only from official vendors to avoid tampered devices.
- Keep firmware updated via Suite; firmware updates are cryptographically signed.
- When connecting in public spaces, use a trusted device and network.
Phishing & social engineering
Verify URLs and support channels. Real support will never ask for your seed or full PIN. If you’re unsure, consult official documentation or community channels without sharing secrets.
Troubleshooting
Device not recognized
Try a different USB port and cable, unlock the device, or reboot your computer. On Linux/macOS check system permissions for USB devices.
Forgot PIN / device reset
Too many incorrect PIN attempts will erase the device to protect your seed. Restore from the recovery phrase on the same or new Trezor to regain access.
Lost recovery phrase
If you lose all copies of your seed and you don't have it stored anywhere else, funds are irretrievable. Protect backups carefully.
FAQ & next steps
- Can I access my wallet from multiple computers?
- Yes — the device holds keys and can be connected to any trusted computer with Trezor Suite installed.
- Is Trezor open-source?
- Trezor firmware and Suite components are open-source; this allows independent review and increases transparency.
- What if I sell my device?
- Factory-reset the device and ensure the buyer creates a new seed. Do not transfer a device containing any active secrets.
